BECOME A MERCHANT Thank you for your interest in becoming one of the valued merchants at Essex Street Market. The Market currently has no vacancies; however you can learn more about our application process below and choose to submit a completed Merchant Application to be considered for our waiting list.
We value the diversity of our merchants and recognize how essential they are in keeping Essex Street Market vibrant and successful. In order to maintain a desirable variety for our customers, applications are evaluated based on the current product selection available in the Market and upcoming vacancies. Currently, only applications for food and farm related merchants are being considered, as further described in the section entitled “Tenant Mix” in the Merchant Application.
On average, the application process will take approximately eight weeks.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Read the materials enclosed in the Merchant Application and carefully complete Market Stall Space Inquiry and Financial Information forms found at the end of this application. In addition, please submit a business plan including, but not limited to, a description of the product(s), offering(s) and/or service(s) to be offered for sale and cost range of items to be offered for sale, any physical improvements that you propose making to the market stall as well as any other information you would like us to consider in our review. Only complete applications will be considered. Please send applications via US Postal Mail or by nationally recognized overnight courier to the address below.
- Once the application is received, Essex Street Market management will begin the review process. The review includes an analysis of the type of product(s)/service(s) offered, the strength of the business plan, feasibility of the proposal, the impact on the market and the existing product mix, amount of space required, and professional references.
- Applicants who best fit with the Essex Street Market’s current needs and vacancies (if any) will be contacted directly to continue with the next stage of the application process.
- Applicants may be asked for additional documentation or clarification to their business plans before a final decision is made.
- Applicants are subject to a background check, including, without limitation, an Internal Background Investigation Questionnaire.
- An applicant that is selected for an available market stall will be offered a Market Stall Permit from the New York City Department of Small Business Services (“DSBS”).
- Qualified applicants who cannot be immediately accommodated will be placed on the Essex Street Market merchant wait list. As space becomes available each application will be evaluated in the order in which it is received and based upon the fit with the Essex Street Market’s existing product selection and its space requirements. Applications expire one year after submission and merchants still seeking space will need to reapply at that time.
